Information and Directions

Welcome to the National Defense University. The University is located on the grounds of Fort Lesley J. McNair in Southwest Washington between the Anacostia River and the Washington Channel. Some local landmarks are the Waterfront Metro, the Waterside Mall, and the Arena Stage. To enter Ft. McNair, visitors without a DoD vehicle sticker will be required to show either a current DoD pictured Identification, a state issued driver’s license with photo, or a passport with photo. Depending on the risk assessment, the Military Policy may ask you for a second form of identification. If that happens you may use two of the three mentioned above.

Travel Directions:

Via METRO: NDU is located about 1/3 mile from the Washington Metro’s Waterfront station on the Green Line. Leaving the station, walk down 4^th Street (South) three blocks until it ends and becomes P Street SW. The Ft McNair main gate will be plainly visible.

By Taxi: Ask the driver to take you to the intersection of 2^nd and V Street SW, near the USCG Headquarters. From the intersection of 2^nd & V turn right (west) towards the James Creek Marina office. Enter Fort McNair through the pedestrian gate near the NE corner of Eisenhower Hall.

By AUTO: (Visitors w/o a DoD vehicle sticker must use the “P Street” gate, just east of the main gate. Also, main gate traffic flows one-way in during mornings and one-way out till it closes at 1700.)

From the Ft McNair Main Gate: Continue straight ahead on 3^rd Avenue until it ends at B Street. Turn left on to B Street and proceed 2 blocks to 5^th Avenue. (If walking, you can turn right on 4^th Avenue.) Turn right on 5^th Avenue. The large building, ahead, on the left side of 5^th Avenue, is Marshall Hall. Eisenhower Hall is one block further down 4^th and 5^th Avenue. Park in one of the lots marked below.

From the Ft McNair P-Street Gate: After passing through the security checkpoint area, turn left along the brick wall. Continue straight ahead until reaching B Street. Turn right onto B Street and almost immediately turn left onto 5^th Avenue. The large building, ahead, on the left side of 5^th Avenue, is Marshall Hall. Eisenhower Hall is one block further down 4^th and 5^th Avenue. Park in one of the lots marked below.
